Removing Red Eye

There are four tools on the QuickFix toolbar.  We used the crop tool and the zoom tool in the first lesson on Quick Fix.  Here we will use the zoom tool, the hand tool and the red eye tool.

  1. Open file that has someone with red eye.  In this case use “Girl With Red Eye.jpg”
  2. Click on “zoom tool” on the tool bar then click on “fit on screen”
  3. Make sure the “+” magnifying glass is clicked on.  This is located in the tool menu (the third row down) on the left hand side.  Then click on the the girl’s left eye in the image until you get the image to nearly fill the screen.
  4. Choose the “Red Eye Tool” on the tool bar (the bottom of the four.)
  5. Click on the left red eye.  This should remove the red eye.
  6. Click on the “hand tool” in the tool bar (the second one down.)
  7. Move the pointer (now a hand) to the image, click and hold the left mouse button, then move the image until the right eye is on the screen.  The hand tool is used to move a zoomed image to the portion of the picture you would like to work on.
  8. Choose the “Red Eye Tool” then click on the right eye and you have finished removing the red eye form the girl.
  9. Choose the zoom tool and click on “Fit on Screen”.
  10. You should now be ready to finish work on your image.

Red Eye is caused by having the flash reflect off of the retina of the eye into the camera lens.  This shows up red in your photograph.  While you can correct this in the computer it is best to prevent it to begin with.  There are several ways to do this as you take the picture.

1.      Have the subject not look directly into the camera.  Ask them to look at a point just off of the camera, such as your shoulder.  The reflection off the retina will then not go directly into the camera.

2.      Move your flash unit away from your camera lens.  This can have uses beyond preventing red eye by giving better shadows on the subject.

3.      Some cameras have red eye prevention.  This is done by setting off a “preflash” which causes the pupil of the eye to reduce in size which shuts off part of the reflection off the retina.
