Photoshop Elements
Project 9
Transporting to a New Time and Place

Getting Started

  1. Open the file “Project 9 Tumacacori Window.jpg”.
  2. Move the image to a 5” x 7” canvas.
  3. Make sure the “undo history” and “Layers” windows are open.
  4. Retrieve your finished image from project 8.

Move Bob to the Window.

  1. Note:  You have two images open, Project 8 and the new  project 9.  The “Undo History” window and the “Layers” window will reflect only the active image.
  2. Make the project 8 image active.  You should have two layers, the top one will be the un-blurred cutout of Bob.  Make that layer active.
  3. Click on “Select – Select All” (or ctrl A) then “Edit – Copy” (or ctrl C).
  4. Make the Tumacacori Window active.  Then “Edit – Paste” (or ctrl V).  The top layer – Bob’s cutout – has been copied to the window.
  5. Close Project 8.

Change the size of Bob to fit the window

  1. Make the Bob layer active
  2. In the tool bar choose the move tool (top right)  Make sure the “Show Bounding Box” has been checked.
  3. Holding the Shift key down, click on a corner of the Bob layer and expand to the point his size will fit the window to look good.
  4. Position Bob’s image by clicking in the middle of the Bob layer and moving it as you like.

Put Bob behind the Window

  1. Turn off Bob’s image by clicking on the eye on the Bob layer.  Make sure that the window layer is active.
  2. Select the “Lasso Tool” then right click on the Lasso Tool and select “Polygonal Lasso Tool”.  Be sure Feather is set to 0.
  3. Trace the inside of the window using the polygonal lasso tool.  You are finished when you get crawling ants around the inside of the window.
  4. Make the inside of the window its own layer in the main menu choose “Layer – New – Copy via Cut”
  5. You now have three layers.  The Window layer needs to be on top so it is completely visible.  Bob needs to be in the middle and the inside of the window needs to be in the background.  You can rearrange the layers by dragging them up and down as needed.
  6. You can have Bob facing the other direction by making the Bob layer active then from the main menu choosing “Image – Rotate – Flip Layer Horizontally”
  7. You can change the size and position of Bob by making the Bob layer active then using the Move tool.
  8. If there are white lines along the edge of the window you may enlarge the inside of the window and position it slightly to remove the lines.

Fill in the upper left hand corner

  1. Select the Eyedropper Tool (two up from the bottom on the left)
  2. Click on the blue sky inside the window.  You have now made the background color the color of the sky.
  3. Make the Window layer active.
  4. Select the “Paint Bucket Tool” (5 down from the top on the left).  Make the tolerance 10 to 35.
  5. Click on the white area on the upper left.  All of the white area in the upper left will be painted sky blue.
