Photoshop Elements and CS
Painting Using Clipping Groups

Getting Started

  1. Open the file “Pots of Tumacacori.jpg”
  2. Create a duplicate layer using the command “Layer – Duplicate Layer” and name the new layer “Tumacacori Pots”
  3. Using the Polygonal Lasso Tool select the large pot on the right.
  4. With the command “Layer – New – Layer via Copy” create a new layer consisting only of the large pot.  Name the layer “Big Pot”

Preparing the new image

  1. Open the file “Tumacacori Mission.jpg”
  2. Using the Lasso Tool roughly select the mission itself leaving a lot of image outside of the mission.
  3. Create a new mission layer with the command “Layer – New – Layer via copy”.  Name the layer “Mission
  4. Drag the mission layer to the Pots of Tumacacori image.
  5. Close “Tumacacori Mission.jpg” without saving.

Place Mission image on the Pot

  1. Change the blending mode of the Mission layer to “soft light”.  Do this by using the drop-down menu on the layers window changing it from Normal to Soft Light.
  2. Change to the move tool and resize and move the Mission layer so that the Mission image fits over the large pot.
  3. With the Mission layer active make it part of a clipping group with the command “Layer – Group with Previous”
  4. As an alternative you can change the blending mode of the Mission layer to “Hard Light” and adjust the opacity of the layer to the desired saturation on the pot.

Correct Color and Contrast

  1. With the Mission layer active create a levels adjustment layer with the command “Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Levels”.  Name this layer “Big Pot levels”Click on Group with Previous Layer and adjust the levels so that the pot is as desired.  Note that the changes only occur on the Big Pot layer.
  2. Ungroup the levels adjustment layer by clicking Shift-Ctrl-G.   Note the levels adjustment not applies to the entire image, not just the layer to which it was grouped.

Alternatively

  1. Regroup the Levels layer with Ctrl-G.
  2. With Tumacacori Pots layer active create another levels adjustment layer with the command “Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Levels”.  Name this layer “Background levels”.  This creates a new layer below the Big Pot layer.  Adjust the levels as desired.
  3. Note that the Background levels layer does not effect the big pot while the Big Pot Levels layer only effects the big pot.  The two can be adjusted independently.
